Guide to the Collections, Mortlock Library of South Australiana
The Mortlock Library of South Australiana as opened in 1986, under the aegis of the State Library and appropriately during the State's Jubilee 150, to bring together in one home a number of important South Australian collections. These included the State Library's significant and carefully tended collections of published works going back to the days of the South Australian Company in 1834, two years prior to the proclamation of the colony in 1836. Among the jewels of the published collections is the newspaper collection which is considered to be excellent in the extent of its coverage of both metropolitan and country press, and which incudes colonial newspapers in German, complementing more recent newspaper titles in a number of community languages.
Also encompassed in the Mortlock Library are the extensive, rich and fascinating private records of South Australian businesses, families and organisations formerly held in the State Archives.
