No sooner had English immigrant Minnie Berrington arrived in Adelaide than she set off north to join her brother opal mining in Coober Pedy.
Digging her own shafts, driving trucks, living in dugouts and bough houses - Minnie was a true pioneer, thriving in a male-dominated world. Later, she joined the first group to work the new Andamooka prospect.
As a writer, Minnie achieved fame in 1937 when her story was published in The Wide World magazine. That article and her 1958 memoir are now republished, together with additional new material by local historian Stuart Wattison, and her grandniece Rachel Berrington.
