Volume I of François Péron´s Voyage of Discovery to the Southern Lands is the official account of the first part of the French expedition led by Nicolas Baudin. This volume covers the period from late 1800, when the expedition left France, to November 1802 when it arrived in Port Jackson.
During these months the French sailors and scientists visited Ile de France (Mauritius), the west coast of Australia and Timor before making their way across the Great Australian Bight to Van Diemen's Land and then Port Jackson. Volume II contains the account of the second part of the voyage.
Péron´s lively report of the voyage was completed after his death by his friend and colleague Louis de Freycinet. It is remarkable for it's close observation of the flora and fauna of Australia and for the recording of the customs and practices of the Aboriginal and Timorese people.
